7 Bible Verses to Read When You Don't Know What to Do

7 Bible Verses to Read When You Don't Know What to Do

There are moments in life when the next step isn't clear. You may be facing an important decision, waiting for an answer, or simply wondering which direction God wants you to take.

In those moments, Scripture reminds us that we don't have to rely on our own understanding. We can seek God, pray for wisdom, and trust Him to guide our steps.

If you're feeling uncertain about what to do next, here are seven Bible verses to help you seek God's guidance and trust His direction.

1. Proverbs 3:5–6 — Trust God With Your Direction

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

When we don't know what to do, our first instinct can be to figure everything out ourselves. Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us that God's direction begins with trusting Him rather than depending entirely on our own understanding.

You may not see the whole path ahead. You don't need to. Bring your decisions to God, acknowledge Him in every step, and trust Him with the direction of your life.

2. James 1:5 — Ask God for Wisdom

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

Not knowing what to do doesn't mean you have to make a decision alone.

James tells us exactly what to do when we lack wisdom: ask God.

Before making your next decision, spend time in prayer. Ask God for wisdom, discernment, and the ability to recognize the right path when it becomes clear.

3. Jeremiah 42:3 — Ask God Where to Go

“That the Lord thy God may shew us the way wherein we may walk, and the thing that we may do.”

This simple prayer captures exactly what many of us need when we're uncertain:

Lord, show me where to go and what to do.

Instead of asking God only to bless the path we've already chosen, we can first ask Him to show us the path He wants us to take.

When you're unsure about your next step, make Jeremiah 42:3 part of your prayer.

4. Psalm 32:8 — God Can Teach You the Way

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”

Uncertainty can make us feel as though we're walking without a map.

Psalm 32:8 reminds us that God is not distant from our decisions. He promises instruction, teaching, and guidance.

Sometimes His direction becomes clear through Scripture. Sometimes wisdom comes through prayer, circumstances, patience, or godly counsel.

You don't have to know everything today. Continue seeking Him and remain willing to follow where He leads.

5. Isaiah 30:21 — Listen for God's Direction

“And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it.”

When several paths seem possible, it can be difficult to know which one to choose.

Isaiah 30:21 gives us a beautiful picture of God's guidance: “This is the way, walk ye in it.”

Rather than rushing because you're afraid of making the wrong decision, give yourself time to pray, read Scripture, and seek wisdom.

God's timing may require patience, but uncertainty doesn't require panic.

6. Psalm 119:105 — Let God's Word Light the Next Step

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

A lamp doesn't necessarily illuminate miles of road ahead. It gives enough light to see where to place your next step.

God's Word often works the same way.

We may want God to show us the entire plan, while He gives us enough wisdom for what we need to do today.

Spend time in Scripture and allow God's Word to shape your decisions, priorities, and direction.

You may not know where the entire road leads yet. Focus on faithfully taking the next step you can see.

7. Proverbs 16:9 — Trust God With the Outcome

“A man's heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.”

Planning isn't wrong. We can think carefully, prepare, set goals, and make decisions.

But Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that our plans ultimately remain under God's direction.

Sometimes a door we expected to open stays closed. Sometimes an unexpected opportunity appears. Sometimes our plans change completely.

When that happens, remember that a change in your plan doesn't mean God has lost control.

Make your plans prayerfully—and remain willing to let God redirect your steps.

A Simple Prayer When You Don't Know What to Do

Father, I don't know what my next step should be, but I know that You do.

Give me wisdom to make the right decision and patience when I need to wait. Help me recognize Your direction and trust You even when I cannot see the entire path ahead.

Guide my steps according to Your Word and help me choose what honors You.

Amen.

Keep God's Word Close

When life feels uncertain, return to these Scriptures and remember:

You don't have to see the entire path to trust the One who guides your steps.

Save these verses, return to them during prayer, and share them with someone who may also be searching for direction.

At Disciple Style, we believe faith shouldn't be limited to a moment on Sunday. It can be carried into everyday life and shared through the messages we choose to wear.
